‘I’ve been cycling since childhood. For me it’s one of the best forms of exercise. This bike was bought for me by my ex-husband 15 years ago. If you want to experience nature it’s the best way to get around, except for walking. And my next upcoming holiday is going to be on my bike, hopefully in Malawi. On a new bike - I can’t go on holiday on this bike! People know me in town because of this bike, but maybe more because of the connection I have with the people in Blomnek township. From 1999 until 2006 I worked here in De Rust as a social worker and during that time, and even after that time, the police often asked me come and assist with suicides and family violence and such. Not only in Blomnek, but the whole community. But I think the people of Blomnek found in me someone who cares, and who is there for them. And they see me on my bike all the time... Cycling means freedom to me. I’m quite a rebel, I rebel against rules and regulations, and cycling is like riding a motorcycle, the wind in your hair - that’s why I don’t ride with a helmet. Freedom and being one with nature.’
