‘I don’t have my own bicycle. If I had my own bicycle I would use it all the time, and I would get more work as well. Langebaan, Paternoster, Vredenburg - I would ride everywhere to get work. Just to put bread on the table. Financially I just can’t afford one. Around here bicycles are expensive. This is my friend’s son’s bicycle. We’ve known each other since we were small so he knows me and he trusts me. I do painting work, but financially the western cape is under a lot of pressure now. I’ve got five children - three girls and two boys. They all want to ride bicycles but we can’t afford it. My eldest daughter’s school wanted to give her a bicycle but I said no because I’m scared of letting her ride on the roads.’
