‘My name is Shorty and my age is 49. I’ve been riding bikes since 10 years old. I bought this bike at a Chinese shop. It works well and I paid R500 for it. It takes you where you want to be, so the bike is very handy. I don’t drive, and I don’t want to drive - no thank you! I don’t work - I’m on disability. I have epilepsy. I haven’t worked for as far back as I can remember. I live in Kenilworth. Sometimes I cycle to Muizenberg for the fun of it, or sometimes I cycle to Scarborough, around the mountain, on a Sunday. And I just enjoy it. Peaceful. I had this bike now for 2 months. Before this I had a racing bike, before they stole it. I was parked at a shop and a bloke just came and he took it and he rode off. I didn’t lock it, it was inside the shop. When I came back my bike was gone. My favorite bike was the one that was stolen - I built it up myself. I had it for about 2 years. Now I’m going back home again. I just met a church friend of mine. But I haven’t been to church for quite a while now because of the practicing and so on for the Argus cycle race. But the race didn’t go too good because by Chapman’s Peak they called it off. Because of the wind conditions. They took us by bus to Greenpoint and from there I cycled home again. Things happen... I had no time in mind, I just did it for the fun of it. I started at 09:00 and they stopped me at 16:00. But I would have finished if it wasn’t for the fall. The thing is this one bloke came form behind, said “to your left”, and we all went to the left, he bypassed right and he came in front and his back wheel touched another cyclists front wheel and down we all went. I hurt my ribs and I got this scar on my head.’
